Coyotes
You see the canine. It’s beautiful, but it runs away as soon as it sees you. What is this beauty? A Coyote! Coyotes are shy and will run away from humans. It is very rare for coyotes to attack humans.
Coyote Facts
Coyotes are carnivores. They eat small rodents such as rabbits, and squirrels. They weigh an average of 25 to 40 pounds, similar in size to a small German Shepherd. Coyotes are shy and won’t attack humans unless threatened. A pack of Coyotes share a territory. Coyotes are canines.
keeping coyotes away
Clear your yard of pet food, berries, and other food sources.
Keep pets and pet food indoors.
Properly contain garbage.
Keep grills cleaned and covered.
Dispose of fruit that has fallen from trees.
Remove bird feeders. Coyotes like bird seed and the birds.
Dispose of dead wildlife.
Remove habitats for animals that coyotes prey upon. Keep shrubbery and brushy areas trimmed and clean up. Secure areas under decks and sheds, and enclose crawl spaces.
Fencing can discourage coyotes when they're higher than 6ft tall.
Hazing coyotes away
Hazing uses deterrents to move an animal out of an area or discourage an undesirable behavior/activity.
Yell and wave your arms while approaching the coyote.
Use Noisemakers: Whistles, air horns, bells, “shaker” cans full of marbles or pennies, pots, lid or pie pans banged together
Throw Projectiles: sticks, small rocks, cans, tennis or rubber balls
Use water hoses, spray bottles or water guns with vinegar water, pepper spray or bear repellent
A coyote may not immediately run away when you yell. If this happens, you may need to approach the coyote and increase the intensity of your actions.
The coyote may run but then stop and look at you. It is important to continue to go after the coyote until they completely leaves the area.
Coyotes may return. Continue to haze them as you did before. It usually takes only 1 or 2 times to haze the animals away for good.
